Engineered wood + PU edge banding — what we use instead
Icon storage beds use engineered hardwood ply for the storage box (more dimensionally stable than MDF under humidity cycling) and PU edge-banded interior seams on every cut face — including the inside of the drawer recesses where you never look. PU banding seals the cut wood from moisture absorption, which is the root cause of the swelling cycle. Solid kiln-dried teak is used for the frame rails and the headboard structure where visible. The hinges and hydraulic struts are all stainless-grade and rated for 50,000+ open-close cycles. On a quality showroom visit, ask the salesperson to open the storage box, run a fingernail along the inside edge, and confirm whether there is a banding strip there or raw MDF — that one check tells you what the bed will look like in year three.
Hydraulic lift vs drawer storage — which is right for you
Hydraulic lift storage gives you the full footprint of the bed (roughly 14 cubic feet on a king) as one open box. Best for seasonal bedding, suitcases, and bulky items you access twice a year. The trade-off is that you cannot access the storage without lifting the mattress and bedding off — fine for occasional use, frustrating for daily-access items. Drawer storage gives you 4 to 6 sectioned drawers along the bed sides, smaller individual capacity but accessible without disturbing the bed. A solid wood headboard (kiln-dried teak with mortise-and-tenon joinery to the frame rails) lasts essentially indefinitely and works better in older Ahmedabad bedrooms with classic interiors. If you are coming from a 12-inch memory-foam mattress, factor in the additional 2 inches of height — getting into a 28-inch-tall bed nightly is genuinely uncomfortable for shorter family members. For older parents in joint-family setups, we recommend a slightly lower bed height (24 inches total with mattress) and a wider drawer on the lower side rail for everyday medication and reading material.
